Colposcopy & LEEP

Abnormal pap smears have become a very common issue for women in part, because of an epidemic of HPV (Human Papaloma Virus) infections. Pap smears are a screening technique that allows us to quickly determine who might be at risk for HPV and in need of further evaluation. Colposcopy is a procedure that allows us to go a step further by using a colposcope to examine the cervix, or mouth, of the womb and take a tiny tissue sample (biospsy). Depending on the diagnosis obtained from the biopsy, we can perform a LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) in the office to treat a potential problem by removing the abnormal tissue. Alternatively, we can freeze the cervix (cryotherapy) for women whose families are not complete.
